Materials you will need:
Unused Pencils
Tape
Scissors
X-ACTO Knife
Empty Aluminum Soda Can
Ink
A Screw
EXTRA FINE Sandpaper
Paper To Write On
Begin by cutting out the template of your choice & set it aside.
Use your X-ACTO knife to make a vertical cut on the soda can. Use caution when using and cutting sharp objects such as a soda can, try at your own risk.
The vertical cut gives the scissors an opening that makes cutting around the can easier. Cut until you have it completely open. If the edges are too sharp cut around it one more time to make it safer to work with.
Tape the template that was cut previously onto the aluminium can surface & cut the aluminium into the shape of the template.
You can layer the print out on top of the aluminum template and make a SOFT bend along the dotted lines. If you put heavy pressure on the bend the aluminum will break and you will have to start over!
Use the screw to make evenly spaced holes along the bend you just made, 3-4 holes will work great. Also keep the holes evenly space. These holes will be used to distribute ink evenly when writing. This step will make the nib scratchy and will need to be sanded smooth, the sanding is the last step.
Tape the side labelled ‘BASE’ around the pencil as tightly as you can!
Pull the side labelled ‘NIB’ to lay parallel to the pencil and then tape it tightly!
Now make an inward bend where it’s labelled ‘BEND’, this will be the ink reservoir.
The final and most important step is to smooth out the nib. When the holes were made with the screw, in an earlier step above, it left the nib sharp and scratchy. Use the EXTRA FINE sandpaper to smooth out the nib.
DO NOT put heavy pressure when sanding because the aluminum is fragile and can break easily. A few LIGHT passes over the sandpaper will give you best results. Dip your finished nib into ink and write what your heart desires with your new homemade Cola Pen.
